Perhaps it’s just another business trip or a much-needed vacation, keeping up with a healthy eating habit while traveling can be challenging. Avoiding unhealthy foods is hard enough as it is, but it might seem a lot harder especially if you are busy rushing to a long flight and spending days running in and out of meetings. There is a solution, so fear not! Here are suggestions to help you eat healthy while traveling and keep you going strong.
Pack in advance
The best news is that food is still allowed in the boat, plane, train, bus, so take advantage and pack easy to-go meals or snacks to keep in your carry on. If you choosing to travel through the airport, make sure all foods are wrapped, contained or packed. The rule on, no liquid over 3.5 ounces still applies so leave the sauces, or dressings at home if they are higher than the required amount.
There are some great healthy snacks you can wrap up and pack on your bag, meals such as a nut butter sandwich, turkey sandwich or even a health food bar, protein powders, fruits and much more. All these snacks are excellent in giving you the energy you so need while traveling.
Buy on your way
If you were busy and weren’t able to pack in advance, well, you can still buy food at the airport, gas station, train station, or bus station. Make sure you select clean and healthy eating. Choose water instead of going for sugary beverages. There also a wide variety of items sold at most terminals and stations such as turkey or chicken sandwich, salads, yogurt, fruits and many more.
Nobody wants to have indigestion, an upset stomach, or low energy when traveling. Take this into consideration when perusing your options, if the food doesn’t look good, smell good or feel right then don’t put it in your mouth. Consuming unhealthy foods while traveling may be easy, but it won’t make your travel fun.
Smart menu ordering
When eating at a restaurant, take a look at their menu online or ahead of time, if available. Select meat and fish items that are poached, baked, steamed, broiled, grilled or roasted, and also choose vegetables that have been cooked or fried.
Dehydration can lead to muscle cramps, headaches, fatigue, and reduced concentration, so it’s imperative to stay hydrated especially while traveling. Carry along a few herbal tea bags such as chamomile or ginger, if you are prone to upset stomach. Stay away from any liquor especially when you are driving, grab a bottle of water or club soda instead.
